GP Research Opportunities

There are many opportunities to become involved in research locally at all levels. Helping to improve the evidence base for problems faced in daily practice can be interesting and stimulating and there is support available for you to become involved.

The first level of involvement can be participation in research studies run by other organisations. Funding and Training are available to enable GPs and Practices to participate. Involvement could vary from identifying patients from the practice database and sending out invite letters to potential participants, to support for developing and gaining funding for a study you would like to undertake. There is a wide range of ongoing research so you can choose to become involved in an area that particularly interests you. The Primary Care Research Network South West (PCRN SW) facilitates practice involvement in high quality studies and provides funds through both NHS Service Support Costs for time taken to recruit patients and the Primary Care Incentive Scheme (PCIS) for practices to become involved in research (by application). If you would like to know more about the PCRN South West, see

For GPs who would like more dedicated funded time to pursue research further there are a number of options:

  1. GPs in training can apply for Academic Clinical Fellowships which provide half time GP training and half time research training with a view to an application for a doctoral training fellowship. For more information see: http://www.nihrtcc.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/acfs
  2. In Practice Fellowships- are nationally competitive fellowships that offer GPs wanting to go on to do a PhD the opportunity for paid sessions in order to develop a protocol and do a research methods MSc (this can be done as a distance learning). For more information see: http://www.nihrtcc.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/inpracfellows
  3. GPs with a PhD can consider applying for Clinical Lecturer Posts. For more information see:  http://www.nihrtcc.nhs.uk/intetacatrain/cl

Other than the formal posts above, Researchers at the Primary Medical Care and Population Sciences Department at Southampton Universityare always happy to have contact from GPs interested in doing research.
