We provide Education Days for all Doctors in GP Specialty Training in the Education Centre at Southampton General Hospital on Wednesday's. We start with coffee from 9.00am and finish at approximately 4.15pm.
Soap Box:
We begin each day with a 20 minute presentation by a trainee on a topic of their choice - usually non-medical. This session is called a 'Soap Box.' We encourage you to use a variety of media to support your presentation including; flip charts, power point, DVD, music etc. It provides you with an opportunity to practice the skill of presenting in a relatively informal environment. See weekly rota
Small Group Work:
We feel that group learning is a cornerstone of our course and establish groups of 8 - 10 ST3s early in the year who then spend the morning sessions with a Programme Director. You will discuss case scenarios, hot topics, evidence based medicine, challenging patients, medio-political issues and any problems which may arise on a weekly basis.
You will also have the opportunity to learn about the MRCGP and the e-Portfolio. The content of each session will be decided by the group, to encourage self-directed learning.
Topic Based Seminars:
The afternoon sessions are topic based seminars. These are linked specifically to curriculum statements - see RCGP Curriculum, and a wide range of outside facilitators are used to run these sessions. See seminar programme
Food:
We will provide a sandwich lunch and tea or coffee throughout the day in the Education Centre - free of charge.
